Because the book is based on WWI (a dreadful event of history), the mood that is depicted in “All Quiet on the Western Front” is commonly dark, gloomy and depressing. Kantorek uses the mood of power to convey patriotism and to encourage the soldiers to work hard and fight for their country. Confusion is conveyed in Paul and his classmates oblivion, when signing up in the military service. Futhermore in the novel, they become confused about what life is about, and because they are constantly surrounded by the traumatic experiences of war, they perception of life revolves around death and is narrow. Nevertheless, as the soldiers enter the military service, they lose their identity as they feel depressed and fearful about what will happen after the war is over. Moreover, empathy is being utilized as a mood. For example, when Paul questions whether to or not murder Duval, the French soldier he encountered in the shell hole – espacially after knowing that the man had a wife and daughter. The book has flashbacks on Paul’s life (before the war) and although he can no longer feel emotions as he used to, there is a sense of melancholy and nostalgia.
